What to Expect During a Kitchen Renovation

Planning a kitchen renovation is exciting, but it’s also natural to wonder what the process will actually look like once work begins. For many homeowners, it’s the first time they’ve undertaken a project like this, so understanding the steps involved can make everything feel much more manageable.

At Craig Vaughan Kitchens, we carry out kitchen renovations across Cardiff and South Wales, managing everything from preparation work through to final installation. While every project is slightly different, most kitchen renovations follow a similar process.

Below we’ve outlined what you can typically expect when renovating your kitchen.

The Planning and Preparation Stage

Before any physical work begins, the planning stage is where the foundation of the project is set. This usually includes finalising the kitchen design, confirming measurements and ensuring everything has been ordered and delivered.

During this stage we often liaise with kitchen designers and suppliers to make sure the design works in practice as well as on paper. Because we regularly install kitchens from suppliers such as Wren Kitchens and Nobilia, we’re able to review layouts and highlight any potential adjustments before installation starts.

Good preparation helps avoid delays and keeps the project running smoothly once work begins.

Removing the Existing Kitchen

The first stage of the renovation itself is removing the existing kitchen. This involves carefully taking out the old cabinets, worktops and appliances so the space can be prepared for the new installation.

At this stage we’ll also disconnect plumbing and electrical connections where needed. Depending on the condition of the existing kitchen and how it was originally fitted, this stage is usually completed within the first day.

Once everything has been cleared, we can properly assess the space and begin preparing it for the next stage.

First Fix Plumbing and Electrical Work

After the room has been cleared, we move on to what’s known as the first fix stage. This is where the plumbing and electrical systems are adjusted to suit the new kitchen layout.

Typical work may include:

  • Moving pipework for sinks or appliances

  • Installing new electrical sockets

  • Preparing wiring for lighting or appliances

Because kitchen designs often involve changes to appliance positions, this step ensures everything is correctly positioned before the cabinetry is installed.

Preparing the Room

Once the first fix work is complete, the room may need preparation before the new kitchen units can be installed.

This may involve:

  • Plastering or skimming walls

  • Repairing damaged areas

  • Preparing the floor if new flooring is being installed

Allowing time for these finishing stages ensures the new kitchen sits neatly and looks properly finished once installation begins.

Installing the Kitchen Units

Once the space is prepared, the new kitchen installation begins. This is where the project really starts to take shape.

During this stage we install:

  • Base cabinets and wall units

  • Integrated appliance housings

  • Storage components and internal fittings

Because we’ve installed hundreds of kitchens across Cardiff and South Wales, we’re very familiar with different kitchen systems and layouts, which helps the installation run efficiently.

Worktops, Appliances and Final Connections

After the units are installed, we move on to the finishing stages of the renovation.

This includes:

  • Installing worktops

  • Connecting appliances

  • Completing electrical and plumbing connections

  • Fitting finishing panels and trims

At this stage the kitchen becomes fully functional, and the final details that complete the design are put in place.

Finishing Touches

The final stage of a kitchen renovation often includes finishing work that helps bring everything together. Depending on the project, this may include decorating, splashbacks or final adjustments.

Before completing the project, we check everything carefully to make sure all appliances, fittings and connections are working properly.
